Since the beginning of 2020, 1,600,000 liters (nearly 422,700 gallons) of drinking water has been distributed by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) to residents of the Donetsk region in Ukraine.

Through a joint project with UNICEF, The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) in Ukraine received one of these deliveries of drinking water to supply to the most vulnerable categories of the population who suffer from water supply disruption. This population was identified within 25 settlements within the Avdeevsky, Maryinsky, Volnovakhsky, and Nikolsky districts and one state-controlled territory.

In August, 576 liters (152 gallons) of drinking water in 6-liter (1.6-gallon) bottles were delivered to the KNP Kurakhov Tuberculosis Sanatorium for Adults in the town of Gostroe, where about 20 Ukrainians who arrived from countries where the epidemic spread of COVID-19 is recorded are under observation.

Also due to this initiative, access to water will be improved for 1,500 residents of villages in the Maryinsky district.

Representatives of ADRA Ukraine and UNICEF met with chairmen of village councils and local residents of the village, and presented their proposed project for improved and sustainable access to safe drinking water in 21 villages and small towns in the Donetsk region, including proposed methods of implementation. During their visit, the group discussed the needs of the village populations and assessed water supply facilities.

Staromaryevka

Eight-year-old Mikhail and 12-year-old Stanislav live with their mother in the village of Staromaryevka in eastern Ukraine. In order to access drinking water, they travel 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) through a military checkpoint and across a wooden bridge over the river, and the same distance back. There is no water in the taps of the houses of the residents of Staromaryevka, and only occasionally do they have access to water used for their cattle. Since travel to Staromaryevka is impossible even for humanitarian missions, ADRA Ukraine delivers water to the neighboring village of Granitnoe, where residents of Staromaryevka come for it with carts and bicycles.

Bottled drinking water for residents of Staromaryevka within the framework of a joint project with UNICEF Ukraine with financial support from USAID / OFDA was first delivered in July by the charitable organization ADRA Ukraine. Now 860 six-liter bottles of water are supplied to the villagers once a month.
