The devastating fires in the Valparaiso Region of central Chile have so far left more than 100 dead, 400 missing, and thousands of houses and acres of land consumed by flames. Faced with this tragic situation, as in every emergency, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) in Chile has mobilized to provide assistance and support to those in need.

ADRA in Action

There are several fronts from which ADRA Chile is channeling assistance to those affected. The Mobile Humanitarian Aid Unit (UMAH) is one of them. It has set up between two shelters, located on Calle 2 Oriente in Viña del Mar, where it is delivering food rations to those affected. It is also offering a laundry service where, during the first day of operation, more than 450 kilograms (nearly 1,000 pounds) of clothes have already been washed.

A mobile clinic is present in Villa Olímpica with the support of the non-governmental organization (NGO) Family Life, which provided the unit where medical attention in ophthalmology, healing, and vaccination against tetanus for the brigaders and volunteers is being carried out.

Among the main needs of the victims are drinking water, food, and personal hygiene products. Some of these items, as well as mattresses and blankets, have been delivered to the shelters where the affected people have settled.
